Boxing Classes for Those in Sydney

Begin Boxing

Boxing has emerged as one of the most popular combat sports around the globe. With the focus on punching and striking techniques, boxing is often referred to as the 'Sweet Science'. Learning boxing can offer numerous benefits, especially for students at Kings Academy in Sydney.

Benefits of Boxing

Boxing is a great way to keep yourself in good physical shape. It is a high-intensity workout that is excellent for improving your cardiovascular endurance, building strength and enhancing agility and coordination.

Moreover, boxing is a way to relieve stress. When you are hitting the punching bag or sparring with an opponent, you completely lose yourself in the workout. It can reduce your stress levels and improve your mood.

Boxing is also an excellent self-defence technique. It can often prove beneficial in unexpected situations when there is no other option left. It also teaches you teamwork, and you get to be a part of a community that shares a similar passion.

At Kings Academy, we believe in sportsmanship and discipline, which are instilled through boxing. Boxing builds toughness, perseverance and humility, which are key traits for personal and professional success.

RULES

Amateur fights consist of three rounds while professional fights can range from four to 15 rounds. Championship fights are normally 12 rounds. Because there is no true governing body, the rules vary greatly, but most countries abide by professional boxing rules.

In all boxing, however, winners are declared either by decision of judges (who keep points on a scorecard during the fight), by a referee or by both. A participant can win in a knockout, in which one rival is punched and cannot get up within 10 seconds, but a doctor or referee can declare the boxer injured or defenceless even if there is no knockdown. A tied or even match is ruled a draw.

The boxing ring is square, 12 to 20 ft (3.7 to 6.1 m) on each side and enclosed by three or four ropes. Since 1892, players have worn leather gloves with only a thumb fingerhole as a general practice. These gloves weigh from 8 oz (227 g) for amateurs down to 6 oz (170 g) for professionals.

EARLY HISTORY

The ancient Greeks believed fist fighting was one of the games played by the gods on Olympus. As such, boxing originated when a person lifted a fist against another in play and became part of the Olympic Games in 688 BC. The sport began to thrive on a wide scale in Roman Times but later diminished after the fall of Rome.

Boxing was revived in the 18th century during the Industrial Revolution. Prizefights attracted participants and spectators from the working class. The organisation was minimal at first and resembled street fighting more than boxing.

The second heavyweight champion, Jack Broughton of England, drew his own set of rules, which were recognized in 1743. They outlawed some aspects that the sport had acquired, such as hitting below the belt. Instead of a ring of spectators, Broughton insisted upon a squared-off area.

MODERN ERA

In 1866, the Marquess of Queensberry gave his support to a new set of rules, which were named in his honour. These rules limited the number of three-minute rounds, eliminated gouging and wrestling, and made the use of gloves mandatory.
